July 02 – Narbonne and Cruising the Canal du Midi

Our shore excursion today was to the city of Narbonne.  More photos of the countryside and the tree lined roads.

Our first stop in Narbonne was the big covered market hall, Les Halles.  

This market is open 365 days a year with over 60 stalls.  All of the stalls were foods – meat, fish, cheeses, vegetables, breads, wines, etc.   

Mary was pretty excited when she found a shop that had Pastel de Natas, a favorite custard tart from Portugal.  We each had one.  

We were fortunately there on a Thursday, when they also have a huge open-air market right next to Les Halles.  Lots of interesting stalls.  Mary bought a hat (she lost hers on yesterday’s field trip).    

From the markets we wandered some of the streets...

past the city hall,

and the old Roman Road in front of it. 

From there it was a short walk to the Cathedral of St. Just and St. Pasteur.  The exterior.

This one was very different from others we have visited in that it was never finished.  It is very tall and wide, very gothic with stained glass windows

and the interior is very gothic and beautiful…but it is very short length wise.

Then it was time to head back to the boat for another great lunch. 

In the afternoon Chef Jan opened the kitchen up for a demonstration.  He made profiteroles and cheese puffs.  Mary and Carol attended.  Some photos of the small kitchen that produces all of our meal masterpieces.
